SoulEater-maincharacters

The main characters of Soul Eater (from left to right):
Top row: Black Star, Tsubaki, Soul Eater, and Maka Albarn.
Bottom row: Patti and Liz Thompson, Death the Kid, Blair, and Death Scythe.

This is a list of characters from the Japanese manga and anime series Soul Eater. The series revolves around students classified as meisters (職人 shokunin?) at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (死神武器職人専門学校 Shinigami Buki Shokunin Senmon Gakkō?), or the DWMA (死武専 Shibusen?) for short. The head of the school is Shinigami, Death himself. It is run as a training facility for weapons and the human wielders of those weapons to hunt down and take the souls of evil humans, to prevent them from becoming "kishin", demon gods. Three meister-weapon partnerships are made a focus of the series: Maka Albarn and her scythe Soul Eater, Black Star and his chain scythe Tsubaki, and Death the Kid and his dual pistols Patti and Liz Thompson.

Protagonists

SoulEaterMainCharacters

The three main meisters of Soul Eater (from left to right): Death the Kid, Maka Albarn, and Black Star.

Meisters of the DWMA are the wielders of human weapons. Students who become meisters must be skilled at channeling their soul wavelengths, and are assigned a weapon partner early on. Meisters constantly train with their weapon partners to synchronize the wavelengths of their souls to effectively battle against witches and evil humans. By utilizing a technique called Soul Resonance (魂の共鳴 Tamashii no Kyōmei?), a meister and weapon pair is able to access new powers and skills. Particularly high-tier meisters are able to fight without a weapon by utilizing the wavelength of their soul offensively.

Weapons are humans capable of transforming completely into different classes of weapons for the use of meisters. Weapons are also able to maintain their human form while manifesting parts of their weapon form for use in battle. Assigned to a meister partner early on at the DWMA, weapons and their partners constantly train to synchronize their soul wavelengths to increase their power. By utilizing Soul Resonance (魂の共鳴 Tamashii no Kyōmei?), a weapon can access different weapon forms. The goal of all students at the DWMA is for their weapon to become a Death Scythe (デス・サイズ Desu Saizu?). To gain the status of Death Scythe, a weapon must consume exactly ninety-nine evil human souls and one soul of a witch. Particularly powerful weapons are able to fight without need of a meister.

Maka Albarn

Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa (Japanese), Laura Bailey (English), Junko Takeuchi(drama CD)

Maka Albarn (マカ・アルバーン Maka Arubān?) is Soul's meister. The two make a good team, though Maka is prone to violent outbursts when Soul does something foolish. She is a dedicated student, who always scores at the top of the class, and the daughter of Death Scythe. She has a very strained relationship with him due to his excessive flirting with other women, which lead her mother to divorce him.

Maka is a skilled scythe meister, able to utilize the Witch-Hunt and Demon-Hunt techniques with ease when resonating her soul with her partner. She is skilled in Soul Perception, which allows her to track souls and judge their strength. She has the potential to develop the ability to the point where she can detect witches despite their spells, which makes her a great threat to them. When resonating with Soul, the black blood from Soul also begins to affect Maka, which causes her to slowly dip into insanity if they cannot control it. She eventually develops a "anti-insanity wavelength", which allows her to repel the effects. After Soul becomes a Death Scythe, she becomes obsessed with using their new flying ability and the shape of the wings.

Soul Eater

Soul Eater (ソウル=イーター Sōru Ītā?)
Voiced by: Sōichirō Hoshi (drama CD), Kōki Uchiyama (anime) Micah Solusod (English)
Soul Evans is Maka's Demon Scythe partner and the titular main character alongside Maka. He is called "Soul Eater" by his friends. His human appearance and attitude is that of a teenage boy. He drives a motorcycle, which he and Maka use for transportation. Soul tries to maintain a "cool" image, and very often states how cool he and his actions are. Being a cool guy, he almost always uses the direct approach to solve problems, which fails most of the time. Soul is good friends with Black Star because of their similar personalities, yet when they try to enter combat together they encounter difficulties due to their differing soul wavelengths. Soul's way of absorbing souls is literally eating them. He sometimes becomes too driven by the idea of eating souls which leads him to bicker with Maka, but in the end they remain friends and partners. He has trouble showing certain feelings, claiming that he shares Crona's fear of being close to others. Soul normally seems more easygoing and relaxed than Maka, but he often displays great wisdom and understanding of how to help those around him. As such, his peers show great respect for his judgment and opinions. He can also be somewhat aloof at times, such as when he refused to play the piano at his friends' party.
Soul is a skilled pianist in both the anime and the manga. In the anime, Soul plays the piano to coordinate the Chain Resonance of Maka, Black Star and Death the Kid. In chapter thirty of the manga, Maka mentions that Soul played a dark song when they first met. In chapter fifty-five, it is revealed that Soul comes from a noble family of musicians and he has an older brother named Wes, a violinist, whom Soul has an inferiority complex towards. Soul is the only current member of his family who can change into a weapon.
Soul's body has been invaded by Ragnarok's Black Blood. This makes him more powerful but could lead to his soul consuming Maka's if he lets the insanity of the black blood get out of control. Any attack that Soul has must be done by Maka wielding him, which is shown to depress Soul as this means he cannot protect Maka when she is unable to fight. However he can transform his arm or hand into the blade part of his scythe form. Soul's scythe form is incredibly heavy and cannot be used by people whose soul wavelength is incompatible with his. After defeating Arachne, Soul and Maka gather the remaining demon souls necessary for making him a full fledged Death Scythe. Due to becoming a Death Scythe, he can make his blade larger and smaller, something which is basic for a Death Scythe. When he and Maka first try out the winged form, both decide the long blade is a nuisance and make it shrink.
Forms:
  • Witch-Hunt Slash (魔女狩り Majogari?): A traditional scythe weapon resonance form, Soul's weapon end resembles a crescent moon. The Witch-Hunt Slash has a purifying power which makes it effective against immortal beings like witches.
  • Demon-Hunt Slash (魔人狩り Majingari?): A special Soul Resonance form Maka inherited from her mother. The Demon-Hunt Slash is an improvement on the Witch-Hunt Slash form, and as such is significantly more powerful, carrying Maka's Anti-Demon Wavelength with its attacks. It is suggested that the Witch-Hunt Slash can harm immortal beings, and Demon-Hunt Slash can kill them. While in this form, Soul resembles a giant axe-scythe hybrid weapon.
  • Wings: Although the winged form has not been named yet, it is made possible due to Maka's Grigori soul. Although Soul originally gave in to Maka's demand for "cute wings" (due to an angel fixation she had at the time), she soon realized that they were severely hampering her combat abilities. Thus they returned the wings to their original, less fluffy form.
Wes Evans (ウェス エバンス Wesu Ebansu?)
Wes is Soul's brother and was the first one to find out about Soul's weapon abilities. He is said to be a master at the violin. Soul feels that he can never be like his brother because he does not know what he is 'capable of'. Wes resembles an older version of Soul and has noticeably tamer hair than his younger brother. He only appears in the manga.

Death the Kid

Death the Kid (デス・ザ・キッド Desu Za Kiddo?)
Voiced by: Takako Honda (drama CD), Mamoru Miyano (anime), Todd Haberkorn (English)
Death the Kid is Shinigami's son and the meister of Patti and Liz. He is called Kid by his friends and family. He refers to Shinigami as 'honorable father' (父上 chichiue?) and seems to be named after him, as it has been shown that Shinigami's name was "Death" when he was younger. Kid suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is represented as a complete obsession about everything being symmetrical. To him, anything symmetrical is beautiful and if something is off by even the slightest measurement he will try to correct it right away. While Kid himself tries to look as symmetrical as possible, his hair causes him problems as one side is completely black while the other has three white strips going across it. Showing him anything that is too asymmetrical or mentioning his hair will send Kid into a state of massive depression, make him feel ill, or cause him to cough up blood and faint in the most extreme of cases. This behavior sometimes results in Kid being unable to fight because he is distracted by his enemy's symmetry, or by the lack of symmetry in his surroundings. When this happens it usually requires some encouragement from Patti or Liz to get Kid to focus again.
The lines in Kid's hair are called Sanzu Lines. In the manga, Mosquito noted that since the lines are not connected Kid was not at full power. When using the Brew to reattach the arm he lost in a fight to Mosquito, Kid noticed that the Brew had also connected one of the lines to the other side of his head. This caused Kid to gain some new abilities, like being able to upgrade the caliber of his shots from Patti and Liz from .38 to .42 and changing his guns to visually match the Israeli made Desert Eagle (which have the words Death Eagle engraved on them). In the anime, all three of the Sanzu lines connect when Kid is near death, causing his Soul Resonance to transform into two oversized cannons on his arms.
Although his father has said that Kid is a shinigami and does not need to collect souls, Kid wants to make a Death Scythe of his own. Because he uses two weapons (the guns do not count as a set), Kid will have to collect twice as many souls (198 evil human souls and two witch souls). In the manga Maka mentioned that it is normally hard to match soul wavelengths with more than one weapon, but Kid is able to do so because he, Liz, and Patti have a mutual admiration for each other. Kid admires Patti and Liz's positive souls due to his negative personality.
As he was born a Shinigami, Kid's potential power is technically far above that of his fellow DWMA students. However, the details of Kid's (or his father's) nature as Shinigami have not been revealed. Both share a skull motif (in Shinigami's mask and Kid's rings and necktie) and dark, vaguely monstrous shadows appear around them when either use their abilities (such as Soul Resonance). They also seem to possess the ability to store souls within their bodies, as opposed to other technicians who can only hold onto the souls or give them to their weapon to devour.
When fighting, Kid holds his guns upside-down and pulls the triggers with his pinkies. He refuses to fight with a single weapon as it would not be symmetrical. Kid is also able to fight without Liz and Patti through martial arts however, focusing on chops, kicks, and hammer blows and using various stances (usually Stance of Sin, but after one of his sanzu lines connected he battled Mosquito with Stance of Punishment). His Soul Resonance attack is called Death Cannon and morphs the guns into a form resembling cannon barrel. In the manga Kid is able to strike multiple targets at once through a technique called the Sanzu River Shot - Sanzu Falls when one of his Sanzu lines is connected. Kid has a flight-capable skateboard called Beelzebub, which he uses as a form of short distance transportation, though it could be used for long distance as well, as in the manga he used it for flying to the Sahara. Kid's favorite number is eight because of its symmetry.

Liz and Patti

Liz: Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe (Japanese), Jamie Marchi (English), and Yūko Kaida
Pattie: Voiced by: (Japanese), Narumi Takahira (English), and Miyuki Sawashiro (drama CD)

Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson (リズ(エリザベス)・トンプソン Rizu (Erizabesu) Tonpuson?) and Patricia "Patti" Thompson (パティー(パトリシア)・トンプソン Patī (Patorishia) Tonpuson?) are two sisters, who take the form of Twin Guns and pair up with Kid. Liz is the older sister and much more mature than Pattie. She is very cowardly and cynical, and she finds Kid's perfectionist attitude annoying. Patti is very naive and childlike, speaking like a small child and finding amusement in very trivial things. She constantly laughs, even during extreme danger, and she believes everything to be a game. She is not very smart, and while testing, spends her time making her test papers into an origami giraffe. She often shows a psychotic rage in order to encourage her sister, though she quickly switches back to her carefree self. They used to live on streets of Brooklyn, where they would mug people in order to survive, though they joined Kid's after admiring his dignified soul. Pattie is a skilled martial artist and each sister can wield the other in their weapon forms.

Black Star

Black Star (ブラック☆スター Burakku☆Sutā?)
Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi (drama CD/anime), Brittney Karbowski (English)
Black Star is a descendant of the Star Ninja Clan, a clan that was notorious for doing anything for money. This caused the ninja to be hated and feared in many places. Due to their actions the entire clan was exterminated by the DWMA thirteen years ago. Black Star, who was just a baby then, was taken in by Sid. Even though his parents and family were killed, Black Star bears no grudge over this. He accepts his parents' death because of the evil life they lived. The star tattoo on Black Star's right shoulder sometimes causes him trouble, as it marks him as a Star Clan ninja who are still hated and feared to this day in some villages.
In battle, Black Star uses ninja tactics. His biggest weakness is that he is a total show-off. He intends to surpass God, something which he will loudly proclaim even during fights, thereby defeating the purpose of ninja stealth. His delusion of stardom is so great that he constantly gives out autographs that nobody wants. Black Star hates it when someone gets more attention than him and will try anything to upstage others. His large ego seems to boost his soul energy though, as his soul is far larger than that of the average DWMA student.
His weapon is Tsubaki, though Black Star is a decent fighter even when unarmed. This makes him more versatile than other meisters. While wielding Tsubaki, Black Star can use abilities like creating shields and sensing enemies as well as moving at high speed and creating clones of himself. Without Tsubaki, he can send a large amount of soul energy through an opponent's body to stun or hurt them. Though he rarely demonstrates it, Black Star is very loyal to his weapon. During Tsubaki's battle with her brother Masamune, Black Star refused to leave her side even though he was being brutally beaten by villagers for belonging to the Star Clan.
Black Star's favorite number is one because he considers himself to be number one. Halfway through the series he started to doubt his skills due to a few defeats, and seemed to have become obsessed with gaining power. Something similar happened to his father White Star, who became a kishin because of it. In the anime Black Star finally overcame his doubts after his final fight with Mifune. This allowed him to unlock his true soul resonance with Tsubaki.
White Star (ホワイト☆スター Howaito☆Sutā?)
Voiced by: Kenta Miyake (anime)
White Star is Black Star's father. His overpowering drive for victory led him to take even innocent souls, something which eventually turned him into a kishin. White Star was the head of a clan of ninja warriors who killed indiscriminately until Meisters from the DWMA came in and eliminated the entire clan, leaving only the infant Black Star alive. In the anime, it is shown he fought Mifune on two occasions: once before becoming a kishin and once after.

Tsubaki

Tsubaki Nakatsukasa (中務椿 Nakatsukasa Tsubaki?)
{{anime voicesMamiko Noto}} (drama CD), Kaori Nazuka (anime), Monica Rial (English)
Tsubaki is Black Star's Shadow Weapon partner. She is a very patient and understanding person, which is needed to put up with Black Star's constant bragging. Even though Tsubaki is sometimes disheartened by Black Star's attitude she still puts up with it because she believes in him. She is a good student and got a decent score on doctor Stein's test but was also shown to be a bit naive, thinking Stein was too nice to ask trick questions. Tsubaki has a talent for cooking and has been complimented on a few occasions by her friends.
Tsubaki comes from an established family of weapons descending from a weapon created by one of Arachne's younger sisters. Though it's usually the oldest child in the family that inherits most transformation abilities, Tsubaki's older brother Masamune is only able to transform into a katana. Instead Tsubaki is the one who has the ability to change into multiple ninja weapons like a shuriken, smoke bomb, or kusarigama. This made Masamune very bitter and cruel. In the end Tsubaki reluctantly fought her brother to stop him from harming people. Masamune's soul was the first evil soul Black Star and Tsubaki claimed. It gave Tsubaki the ability to take her brother's katana form, even though this puts a lot of stress on Black Star. Like all demon weapons Tsubaki has the ability to change part of her body into weapon form. In her case she can transform her ponytail into a chain or a single kusarigama.
Forms:
  • Chain Scythe: Two small scythes at the end of chain.
  • Shuriken: An oversized, five-pointed ninja throwing star.
  • Smoke Bomb: A bomb for making a smoke screen for escapes or diversions.
  • Dummy Star: Tsubaki assumes the form of Black Star to confuse the enemy.
  • Ninja Sword: A short ninja knife weapon similar to a tantō.
  • Dark Sword: A black katana resembling her brother's weapon form. When Tsubaki is in her Dark Sword mode, both she and Black Star will have black marks appearing on their arms and face. During Soul Resonance the katana becomes longer and will start glowing red.
Masamune (マサムネ?)
{{anime voicesHiroshi Tsuchida}} (anime)
The Uncanny Sword, Masamune, is Tsubaki's older brother. He speaks using ancient words and likes to write haiku. In weapon form he resembled a black katana. Masamune became bitter over his younger sister's abilities because she inherited more weapon forms than him. This bitterness made him an extremely dangerous weapon. Thinking his sister pitied him, Masamune left home and wandered the world, possessing others and forcing them to use him as their weapon. This way he collected any soul he wanted and started on the path to become a kishin. Masamune finally allowed himself to be defeated and absorbed by Tsubaki after he saw that she really does care about him. He now resides deep within Tsubaki in the form of a large deer.
Attacks: Masamune cannot use any attacks until he has possessed someone to wield him.
  • Soul Possession: Allows Masamune to overpower and control the soul of his user.
  • Puppet Shadow: Allows Masamune to control the shadow of the person he possessed.
  • Puppet Thrust: By folding the Shadow Puppet onto the blade, Masamune can create a far reaching lunge thrust.
  • Split Branches: After the Puppet Strike, large spikes come out from the shadows body to skewer the enemy at close range.
  • Puppet's Rain: By using multiple Shadow Puppets to restrain his enemy, Masamune stabs his enemy.

Franken Stein

Voiced by: Yuuya Uchida (Japanese), Chuck Huber (English) Mitsuru Miyamoto(drama CD)

Franken Stein (フランケン・シュタイン Furanken Shutain?), commonly known as Stein, is considered to be the most powerful meister to ever graduate from the DWMA. He views the world as his own place to experiment, and he constantly forces back urges of insanity that compel him to dissect everything. He loves to experiment, even going so far as to place a giant bolt through his own head, which he occasionally turns while thinking. He is the former partner of Death Scythe, who is very weary of Stein due to various experiments performed upon him. He starts to note that he cannot control his sanity after the Asura is released, which causes him to hallucinate and act extremely reclusive.

Despite being a meister, he is very formidable in hand to hand combat because of his understanding of soul wavelengths. He can match his own wavelength to that of his opponent to disrupt them, release it as a powerful current, create shields, and immobilize the enemy. He is also extremely skilled as a scythe wielder, and he can partner with Spirit with ease. Stein also partners with Marie Mjölnir (マリー・ミョルニル Marī Myoruniru?) (Voiced by: Chieko Honda), the Death Scythe in charge of Oceania, in order to help calm him with her soothing wavelength. She is obsessed with the idea of marriage and retiring, and according to Asuza, Stein is her first love. She also had a former relationship with Joe Buttataki and wishes to find his murderer. Her weapon form is that of a small tonfa with a lightning insignia on the front. She can utilize a technique called "Izuna" to channel electricity into her meister's motor nerves, dramatically increasing their athletic ability. Her weapon form is much larger in the anime, and she has a "Redemption Wavelength", which can cure insanity.

Antagonists

Arachne

Arachne (アラクネ Arakune?)
Voiced by: Michiko Neya (anime)
Known as "The Heretic Witch", Arachne becomes the main antagonist in Soul Eater after Medusa is defeated for the first time. Her animal theme is the spider. Arachne is the leader of the massive organization "Arachnophobia" and uses regular spiders to spy on her enemies. Arachnophobia's main base of operations is the castle Baba Yaga. In the manga Arachne is referred to as the mother of all Demon Weapons. It is explained she created the first Demon Weapon by killing a number of humans and a single witch.
Arachne is the eldest of the three Gorgon Sisters and Medusa's older sibling, but the two don't get along very well. Unlike Medusa, Arachne's is more focused on manipulating the enemy from afar instead of facing them in direct combat. If forced to fight, Arachne can create threads of spider silk that leave a person immobilized for an certain amount of time (depending on how strong that person is). Another type of magic allows her to imprison a person inside their own mind and control them by making them face their worst fears. Should someone outside distract the targeted person however, the spell will be broken.
In the manga, Arachne's lifeless body is found by Maka, Soul, and Medusa once they infiltrate her lair within the castle. Maka senses Arachne's soul is not dead yet and that she is still in the room with them. Arachne then appears to them as an enveloping black mass and explains she discarded her body to become "insanity itself", rendering her impervious to Maka's attacks and Medusa's spells. In this form, Arachne's mental attacks are much stronger and capable of disabling Medusa instantly and affecting people within a large radius. Arachne intended to absorb the kishin Asura and become "the mother of all". Maka eventually defeats Arachne and Soul claims her soul. However, Medusa ends up abandoning Rachel's body in favour of Arachne's discarded Gorgon body. Medusa becomes concerned when she realizes that there are still residual aspects of Arachne's consciousness in her older sister's body, indicating that Arachne may not be dead.
In the anime Arachne discovers Asura's hideout and persuades him to join her cause at Baba Yaga castle. She takes very good care of him and allows him to do as he pleases (which includes killing several Arachnophobia minions). All the while Arachne uses Asura's power to charge her madness inducing machines, which have been placed at strategic locations around the world. During the Sibusen attack, Asura fights Shinigami and manages to defeat him. After the battle, Asura reflects on the growing feelings he has towards Arachne. He becomes afraid and kills her, devouring her soul afterwards.

Mosquito

Mosquito (モスキート Mosukīto?)
Voiced by: Takashi Inagaki (anime)
Mosquito is Arachne's butler. His appearance is that of a short old man with a large pointy nose which is he uses to suck the blood out of a victim. In the manga he shows a sense of honor as he lets Maka, Black Star, and Kid leave when he faces them because their time was running out and they impressed him during the fight. Later he attempts to defeat the fake Eibon but gets killed while in his form from 800 years ago.
In the anime Mosquito is defeated by Maka, Black Star and Kid when they use their Chain Resonance powered by Soul Eater's black blood. Before Maka can land the killing blow, Mosquito escapes by detatching his head from his body. He manages to return to Baba Yaga castle with the fake Brew and later in the series he oversees the castle's defences when DWMA attacks.
When fighting, Mosquito can change his body to the way it was at an earlier age. His form of one-hundred years ago is Mosquito's hardest and toughest incarnation. When in this form the muscles in his upper body enlarge, giving him a huge gorilla-like torso. In his form of two-hundred years ago, his limbs and nose are longer, giving him a streamlined, feline body structure. This was when Mosquito was the fastest and most evasive. During his form of four-hundred years ago, his soul wavelength swells up enormously and he takes up the shape of a young man with slick, combed hair. In this form, Mosquito is able to construct and reconstruct his body from bat-shaped darkness. This was also when he was at his most numerous, Legion. Eight-hundred years ago, Mosquito was at his greatest. However, nearly nothing is revealed about this form before Mosquito's death, except that his face becomes goblin-like and his pupils multiply to resemble the eyes of an insect. He also refers to himself as a vampire. Mosquito uses his needle nose for attacking, any other attacks depend on the form he is using.

Asura

Voiced by: Toshio Furukawa

Asura (阿修羅 Ashura?) is the first demon god, who is originally the strongest member of Shinigami's subordinates eight hundred years before the events of the series. Though he was able to destroy all of the witches of the East by himself, he was fearful of everything and trusted no one, causing him to develop strange habits, such as covering his head with countless long scarves and wearing five or six shirts on his body at a time. He eventually became obsessed with power, which caused him to eat his own weapon partner, Vajra, and numerous innocent souls. After being consumed by insanity, he transformed into a demon god, and he has skin ripped off and his soul sealed inside by Shinigami. He is eventually released by Medusa, and he goes off into hiding while his insanity spreads through the world. He is sought out and comforted by Arachne in the anime, though he eventually kills her after becoming frightened of feeling close to her.

Asura can use his skin, which he forms into "scarfs" wrapped around his body, can be used to attack and defend. He is able to release enough of his soul wavelength through a single finger to easily knock out Kid and he can take attacks from Black Star without flinching. He can cough up Vajra to use in battle, and he can fire powerful beams of energy. His existence spreads insanity feverishly, and it has very negative effects on the world.

Crona

Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto

Crona (クロナ Kurona?) is Medusa's child, who is abused and experimented on in an attempt to make Crona into a demon god. She instills upon Crona obedience and madness as a child by forcing Crona to kill small animals with being thrown into a dark room for days as a punishment for disobeying. She also replaces Crona's blood with "black blood", a substance that hardens to protect Crona from physical damage. Ragnarok (ラグナロク Ragunaroku?) (Voiced by: Keiji Himeno), a demon blade, is also melted into the blood, which gives him a symbiotic relationship with Crona. He constantly picks on and belittles Crona, which reinforces Crona's shy and naive personality. Crona finds it impossible to interact with other people, often hiding in dark corners to ease anxiety. During Crona's time at DWMA after the supposed death of Medusa, Maka and her friends become very close with Crona, and because of Maka's support, Crona is much more happy.

Crona has little will to actually fight, so Medusa places a spell on Crona to increase aggression. She sends Crona to have Ragnarok devour as many souls as possible in an attempt to make them into a demon god. Ragnarok is initially barely the size of Crona's head, but as he devours more souls, he eventually becomes larger than Crona's entire body and gains the ability to grow large wings. Ragnarok can control Crona's black blood, which allows him to use it as a projectile after it leaves the body, and he can instantly harden the blood to reduce damage from impacts. His sword form has a mouth that can scream in order to cause pain to opponents and gather souls. They can also fire solid sound waves. As with his humanoid form, the sword's size and power depend on the number of souls he has eaten.

Medusa

Voiced by: Hōko Kuwashima

Medusa (メデューサ Medyūsa?) is a witch, who infiltrates DWMA under the guise of a kind nurse to awaken Asura and continue her research on the black blood. She is Crona's mother, and through years of abuse and research, she infuses Crona with the black blood and Ragnarok, and manipulates Crona into a ruthless killer. She often claims to care for Crona, though she simply views Crona as a tool to expend at any point. She sees the world as a giant experimentation ground, which is what causes her to awaken Asura. She is killed by Stein, whose similar personality interests her, but she manages to scatter her soul and reform it into a snake. Afterward, she posses a young girl named Rachel and uses "Brew" as leverage to form a truce with DWMA. In the anime, she convinces Stein to leave with her, though Crona, Marie, and Maka eventually destroy her soul. In the manga, she goes with a group of students into Arachnophobia, and after the defeat of her sister, Arachne, she takes over her body.

She uses magic based around snakes, and her chant is "Nake snake cobra cobubrara." She has thousands of snakes within her body, which can turn into numerous "Vector Arrows" to pierce the enemy, act as a upward tornado-like shield, whip the opponent, or be placed into the body of someone else, which allows her to either blow them up or communicate with them telepathically. She can create "Vector Plates", large arrows on the ground that forcibly throw anything on them in the direction that the arrow is pointing. She either uses them to propel herself towards the enemy to engage in close combat or to fling an attacker away from her. She can also place a "Vector Boost" upon someone else, which allows them to double the power of a strike or spell.

  • Eruka Frog (エルカ・フロッグ Eruka Furoggu?) (Voiced by: Misato Fukuen) is a witch, who initially attempts to kill Medusa for endangering all witches. Medusa recruits her unwillingly by implanting a number of snakes into her and blowing up her close friend, Mizune, to show what happens if she disobeys. Medusa promises to remove one snake per every properly accomplished task. She can transform into a frog to spy on others or hide, and she can summon a number of tadpole-like black balls with frog faces that can hop toward their target before detonating.
  • Free (フリー Furī?) (Voiced by: Rintarō Nishi) is an immortal werewolf, who was placed into jail after stealing Mabaa's left eye and implanting it into himself. He is freed by Eruka under Medusa's orders, and he willingly serves her for freeing him. Having "lost" his name during his imprisonment, he starts to call himself Free. He is rather carefree, as he spent his time in jail attempting to escape through ways seen in movies rather than simply breaking through his cell. He is very skilled in hand to hand combat and ice magic due to the eye gained from Mabaa. Using the mantra "Wolf wolves wolf wolves", he can encase an iron ball left on his leg or a body part in ice to use as a blunt weapon. He can create ice pillars to encase foes and spears to impale them. He can create an illusion to project his actions into another area, fire an energy blast from his eye, and use spacial magic to isolate an area in another dimension.
  • Mizune (ミズネ?) (Voiced by: Mayuki Makiguchi) is the name of a family of witches that resemble mice. They speak only by saying "chi", though others can understand them. Despite feeling guilty over the death of one of them to Medusa, Eruka convinces them DWMA is at fault, so five of them join Medusa. They can use their whiskers as blades, and they can combine together to form a single humanoid witch. The form is more mature depending on how many members of the family take part in the transformation.

Noah

Noah (ノア Noa?), aka Eibon (エイボン Eibon?), aka Grimoire (グリモア Gurimoa?)
Voiced by: Daisuke Kirii (video game)
Noah is someone working with Arachne under the false name Eibon. He wears a plaid hat with a few metal earrings on it and has tattoos on his arms that are really shadows. Noah and Mosquito are not on good terms, and Mosquito has always been extremely distrustful of him. Noah has only shown one form of attack so far: summoning a shadowy worm-like creature from his book, the Book of Eibon. Noah's real identity is a mystery, but he has taken up Eibon's title because of the "brand recognition" it offers. His goal is to use the Book of Eibon to absorb and "collect" everything, which he feels in essence would make him "everything". Absorbing everything includes other living beings, as he is recently shown to have trapped Death the Kid within the confines of his book. To achieve his ambition he betrayed Arachnophobia by doing something to Arachne and easily killing Mosquito, thereby revealing his real name: Noah. He is allied with the kishin and has formed a group in order to kill Maka because of her soul perception ability. His group consists of Justin, Giriko, the clown, and a new character named Gopher. In the game Soul Eater: Monotone Princess he is named Grimoire and is assisting Ponera. Noah does not appear in the anime.

Clown

Clown (道化師 Dōkeshi?)
The Clown is a powerful enemy described by himself as the "the terror that can be seen". He essentially is the incarnation of insanity, which makes his soul wavelength the same as Asura. His attacks concentrate most on the infection of insanity, although he can perform some physical moves. The Clown first appears in a mission in a factory in Russia, in which he catches Maka with his powers, but she is able to escape the insanity by awakening the the Demon-Hunt Slash and eventually defeating him. Later, the Clown comes back in Noah's group. In the manga, he changes his form constantly and it is hinted that he had an encounter with Justin.
In the anime, the Clown is a minor enemy that protects the demon tool to operate "Brew" and he is easily defeated by Kid.

Gopher

Gopher (ゴフェル Goferu?)
Gopher is the only new character in Noah's group, and he only appears in the manga. He has full loyalty in Noah making him aggressive when it comes to insult towards his leader. It is shown that he can use some type of magic. He is in charge of killing Maka when Justin fails that mission. Gopher also possesses a Grigori type soul much like Maka, although Maka states it is "filled with evil magic"

Giriko

Giriko (ギリコ Giriko?)
Voiced by: Nobutoshi Canna (anime)
Giriko is a Demon Weapon and an ally to the witch Arachne. He lives for fighting and destroying but he is completely subservient to Arachne, whom he refers to as Ane-san (a respectful term translating to 'older sister'). Giriko takes the form of a chainsaw in weapon form. Although he is a weapon like Tsubaki or Soul, he openly states his hatred for the DWMA, claiming that he wants to follow his own path rather than be used by a meister. Giriko develops a rivalry with Justin Law, as the two have very conflicting ideas on being a weapon. He mockingly calls Justin "Father" (this is a joke at the fact that Justin dresses like a Catholic priest). In the manga, Giriko is not very good at remembering faces, as seen when he does not recognize Maka when she infiltrates into Arachne's castle with the other DWMA students, even though he and Maka had already faced each other before. Later, he joins forces with the corrupted Justin and Noah in order to follow the kishin's will. Giriko is an expert golem maker and can even make them out of snow in the midst of combat.
Attacks: Giriko's attacks center around the use of his chainsaw blade on various parts of his body. His attacks are stronger when his engine is on.
  • Chain: Giriko can cause the chainsaw chain to appear on his body to act like a sort of armor.
  • Saw Foot: As the name implies Giriko creates a sawblade on his legs so he can kick and cut at the same time. He can also use the sawblades as a pair of engine powered rollerblades to move faster than normal. He applies a gear-shift system with this attack. The higher the gear the stronger the attack is.
  • Reverse Rotation: Giriko uses his hand and feet to stretch the chain around his body, making him a blade disk that allows him to attack with which ever body part is closest to the enemy.

Justin Law

Justin Law (ジャスティン=ロウ Jasutin Rō?)
Voiced by: Yoshinori Fujita (anime)
Justin Law is a seventeen-year-old Death Scythe. He dresses in the garb of a Catholic priest and is a devout servant of his god. While it is never explicitly stated if Justin worships Shinigami (who is a god of death), Asura (who is the demon god, otherwise known as "kishin") or the Christian God, he is shown to wear a kishin pendant in addition to his Catholic clothes. He is the youngest student in DWMA history to become a Death Scythe, something which he achieved at the age of thirteen and without the aid of a partner. Justin is constantly listening to loud techno music on his earphones so he cannot hear what's going on around him. He is a competent lip reader, but with people who wear masks (like Shinigami), Justin can still understand what is being said by hand gestures or by them yelling over his music. He travels by means of a dune buggy with a coffin on wheels connected to it. In the manga, Justin is responsible for BJ's murder—having aligned himself with the kishin, Justin was ordered to kill BJ due to BJ's threateningly powerful soul-perception abilities.
His weapon form, the guillotine, fits his title of "Executioner". Like all weapons Justin changes parts of his body to fight.
  • Holy Jūji-Shūtō (Crucifix Sword-Hand): Justin causes the guillotine blade to come out of his forearm then performs two slashes creating the form of a cross.
  • Carcan Claw: Justin changes one of his arms into the headlock of a guillotine to grab and then attack his enemy at close range.
  • Law Abiding Silver Gun: One of Justin's strongest attacks. He starts by praying to strengthen his soul wavelength. Then he creates two pillars at his side with him hovering right above his enemy, after which he channels his wavelength into his bladed arm and fires downward, beheading his foe in the same fashion as a guillotine. He can also use this attack in a beam-like fashion at long-range.
The prayer Justin says before his Law Abiding Silver Gun is as follows:
We, the people of the city of death, beseech you, our God, as Christ is just
Oh God, let me be an instrument of your peace
I am a pillar of justice
A blade of faith
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy spirit
"Law Abiding Silver Gun"

Other characters

Blair

Voiced by: Emiri Kato, Yūko Chichimoto (drama CD)

Blair (ブレア Burea?) is a cat with strong magical powers, allowing her to take on a humanoid form. She is initially mistaken as a witch by Maka and Soul, who kill her. After the soul causes the transformation into a Death Scythe to fail, she reveals they only took one of her "nine lives" and moves in with them. She takes up a part time job in a night club and hangs around town. She uses pumpkin magic by chanting "Pumpumkin-Pumkin." She can launch pumpkins like cannon balls or pumpkin-shaped explosions.

Death Scythe

Death Scythe (デス・サイズ Desu Saizu?), also known as Spirit (スピリット Supiritto?)
Voiced by: Hiroaki Hirata (drama CD), Tōru Ōkawa (anime), Vic Mignogna (English)
Spirit is Shinigami's current weapon and Maka's father. Most people address him as Death Scythe but his friends still call by him by his name instead of his title. Spirit was married to Kami, his former meister and Maka's mother, but they got divorced shortly before the start of the story due to his constant flirting with other women. Even though he visits clubs, Spirit is still insanely loyal to his ex-wife and daughter. He is extremely sad that his daughter hates him, but still tries to be a good father by looking out for her in his own silly way. He is very protective of Maka and is ready to jump to her aid any time she is in trouble (though he is usually stopped by Shinigami). Spirit is consistently shown to be a warm, caring and kind-hearted man who has trouble articulating his feelings clearly, especially in regards to his love for his daughter. Aside from his love for Maka he cares about children in general, as shown when he wept in anger for Medusa's casual abandonment of Crona, her own child.
Dr. Stein and Spirit were a team when they were still students at DWMA. Spirit was an upperclassman to Stein and Stein still calls him senpai on occasion. Even though they worked together for five years Spirit was unaware of Stein's nightly experiments upon him. It was only with the help of Kami that Spirit finally figured it out. To this day he suffers nightmares about Dr. Stein trying to dissect him.
In weapon form, Spirit is a large, plain black scythe with the handle resembling a cross. His Witch-Hunt Slash form is different from Soul's. Out of all the Death Scythes, Spirit is the only one called "Death Scythe" as a mark of his authority. Despite his personality, his position is apparently not undeserved.
Kami
Kami is Maka's mother and Spirit's ex-wife. She has not been shown, but has been mentioned and in the anime she sends postcards to Maka while traveling the world. She is Spirit's second meister, replacing Stein. Kami is no longer a student in the school, and did not become a teacher like Spirit and Stein. In the anime, Kami is mentioned as having invented the Demon Hunter technique, one of the most powerful scythe techniques. Only Kami, Maka and Shinigami know how to perform this move.

Eibon

Eibon (エイボン Eibon?)
Voiced by: Yasuyuki Kase] (anime)
Like Asura, Eibon was a member of the "Eight Powerful Warriors" under Shinigami long ago. He created Brew and many other demon tools. Not much has been revealed about him, though he is seen in the time vortex wearing a large coat and mask, which cover up most of his body. Eibon is summoned to the DWMA by Shinigami to unlock Brew. In the anime, Eibon searched for immortality, hoping to cure a lover of a fatal illness. He even allied to Arachne's in his search for a cure, but he ultimately failed. As a penance for allying with a witch, he activates Brew for Shinigami.

Enrique

Enrique (猿里華 Enrike?)
Enrique is a monkey who wears trousers, a t-shirt and a baseball hat. He is the meister of the South American Death Scythe, Tezca. His speech consists of the single nonsensical word "gau" and his partner is the only one who can understand him. Although he usually makes jokes, Enrique is very skilled in combat, as shown when saving Maka from Medusa.
Tezca Tlipoca (テスカ・トリポカ Tesuka・Toripoka?)
Tezca Tlipoca is the Death Scythe in charge of South America. His face is yet unrevealed, covered by large bizarre bear mask. He fully understands the speech of his partner, a monkey named Enrique, even though no one else can. Tezca Tlipoca's weapon form is a Demon Mirror wrapped around his meister's right leg. He is named after the Aztec deity Tezcatlipoca, whose name is often translated as "Smoking Mirror."

Excalibur

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu

Excalibur (エクスカリバー Ekusukaribā?) is known as a legendary weapon that is unmatched by any other. He can be used by anyone, though upon finding him, most are unable to stand being around him for a long period of time. He has a large ego, ignores others while they attempt to speak by calling them "fools", and he goes on long, nonsensical rants. He demands that his meister perform one thousands tasks, such as a a daily five-hour reading of his own book. His humanoid form resembles a cartoonish anthropomorphic creature with a very long snout, dressed in a white suit and top hat. Hero, a loser student who would be considered popular at any other school, manages to satisfy Excalibur's demands for a time, which grants him instant teleportation, flight using large wings of light, and power attacks that cause explosions. While not with a meister, Excalibur spends his time in a rock in the middle of a shallow underground lake, which annoys the fairies that inhabit the area.

Joe Buttataki

Joe Buttataki (ブッ叩き・ジョー Buttataki Jō?)
Voiced by: Atsushi Ono (anime)
Referred to as "Mole Hunter" Joe Buttataki in the manga, Joe makes his first appearance at the end of chapter thirty-seven when he is called to the DWMA to investigate the possibility of a spy. Also referred to as BJ (ビージェイ Bījei?), his name when literally translated is "kick the shit out of", a phrase he says at the end of chapter thirty-seven in the manga. Joe's soul perception ability is very powerful. He was the first meister to be able to see through soul protect (a witch's technique to appear human) and his power is growing even now. Joe considers his ability unpleasant however, since it will cause him to mistrust his allies over time. He also possesses the ability to detect lies by placing his fist at another person's chest.
In the manga Joe Buttataki is the ex-boyfriend of Marie Mjölnir. He had apparently kept his distance from her, fearing that his soul perception may grow so powerful that he could see through her. Upon returning to the DWMA, Joe tells Marie that he regretted his decision of breaking up and asked her out for dinner. He is later murdered by Justin Law upon the kishin's orders, because of his strong soul perception ability, which made him a threat.
In the anime, Joe is a member of the technological branch of the DWMA. Shinigami asks him to return to Death City in order to secretly deal with the demon tools and the book of Eibon. Officially Joe comes to fix the DWMA's plumbing. He loves coffee, especially the brand made in a shop called Uncle Bob's Rumba Coffee, and is utterly disgusted by the instant coffee he is served at DWMA. Joe is not killed in the anime and the circumstances behind Stein and Marie's decision to leave the DWMA are different.

Kim Diehl

Kim Diehl (キム・ディール Kimu Dīru?)
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (anime)
Kim is a lamp meister and partner to Jacqueline. She can change Jacqueline into a rocket-powered broom allowing flight or have Jacqueline explode on contact. In the manga, she and her weapon are allied with the Arachnophobia, a group that serves the witch Arachne, though this is not entirely by her choice. It is revealed that Kim is a witch that wanted to get away from the witches' assembly and lifestyle and thus became a DWMA student. Her partner knows she is a witch, but sticks by her all the way. Kim's animal theme is a tanuki (raccoon dog) and her magic chant is longer then most magic users "Tanunucoon Raccooncoon Ponpon Ponkitanu Pon Pon Pon". Since Kim's specialty in magic is regeneration, it goes against the regular destructive witching magic. This is why she was cast out of the witch society. However, after her witch heritage is discovered by the DWMA, she flees in fear together with Jacqueline. In reality the school personnel had full intent to hear her side of the story. Because of these two experiences, Kim has become obsessed with making money as it does not discriminate between its handlers.
Kim is the object of Ox's affections but she constantly turns him down. In the manga Kim is confronted by Ox during the DWMA attack on Arachnophobia's castle. He risks his life to break Kim free from the brainwashing she suffered by the Morality Manipulation Machine. When Ox breaks his antenna-like hairstyle he gets through to her, offering to create a place where she can go. After this Kim seems to reciprocate Ox's feelings. After the events of Arachnophobia, she is accepted by the school and friends alike and is not considered a threat by everyone. This does not happen in the anime and it is not suggested that she is a witch.
Jacqueline O. Lantern Dupré (ジャクリーン・オー・ランタン・デュプレ Jakuriin Ō Rantan Dupure?)
{{anime voicesKanae Oki}} (anime)
Jacqueline is Kim's partner and takes the form of a lamp. In weapon form, she spews fire and can extend to resemble a broom, allowing Kim to fly. Jacqueline's name is derived from jack-o'-lanterns and the renowned English cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Like most weapons, Jacqueline is able to change a part of her body into her weapon form. She can change one her hands into a lamp and use it like a flame thrower.
In the manga Jacqueline is fully aware that Kim is a witch, yet she joined Arachnophobia alongside her. Like her meister she was brainwashed using the Morality Manipulation Machine, although she is later returned to normal. This does not happen in the anime, where she fights against Arachnophobia.

Kirikou Lungu

Kirikou Lungu (キリク・ルング Kiriku Rungu?)
Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (anime)
Kirikou is a pot meister and is often teamed up with Ox for missions. He uses a pair of twins as his weapons, Pot of Fire and Pot of Thunder. He is pretty agile, having the second best running time in the DWMA after Black Star in the manga. He seems to be a bit on the brash side, as he tried to immediately find Kim after she fled the DWMA. His attacks emphasize on the raw punching power of his elemental pots. He can conduct a Soul Resonance with one of the pots, to use a more powerful attack with that pot, or a Soul Resonance with both to attack the opponent with both fire and lightning. The author has revealed in a public conference that unlike many famous manga, a few of them have African characters. Kirikou's name is inspired from the character of Kirikou which is a movie the author enjoys.[1]
Pot of Fire & Pot of Thunder (ポット・オブ・ファイア&ポット・オブ・サンダー Potto obu Faia & Potto obu Sandā?)
Pot of Fire and Pot of Thunder (commonly called Fire and Thunder) are Kirikou Lungu's weapon partners. Though termed "pots", they resemble large gloves in their weapon form. Fire and Thunder are little twins with dark skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. They came from Brazil. As weapons they generate fire and thunder respectively, and Kirikou often uses both elements when attacking. In the manga it is explained that Fire and Thunder are earth shamans and can hear the earth's voice.

Little Ogre

Little Ogre (小鬼 Ko Oni?)
Voiced by: Hōchū Ōtsuka (anime)
Called "Little Ogre" by Soul Eater, this strange imp appeared before Soul inside his heart after Ragnarok infected him with the Black Blood. The Little Ogre constantly tempts Soul with power in exchange for his sanity. He also attempts to spread the insanity of the black blood to others by urging Soul to use soul resonance or chain resonance. The Little Ogre always goes dressed in a tuxedo. His arms seem too long compared to his body and he has the strange habit of biting all of his fingers when he is excited. He resides in a room with a black and red tiled floor and red curtains for walls listening to a jazz record that constantly skips.
In the anime the Little Ogre manages to almost overpower Soul during his final battle against Asura. By drawing too much power from the Black Blood during Chain Resonance, the Little Ogre in Soul's heart grew larger than Soul himself and nearly absorbed all of him. To the outside world it appeared as if Soul had fainted and Maka went into Soul's heart to rescue him. When the Little Ogre notices this, he disguises himself as Soul in order to trick Maka into giving him the last piece of Soul's heart. However, Maka sees through this deception and manages to rescue Soul before the Black Blood can get a hold of the last part of him. This breaks the power of the Little Ogre and causes him to shrink to a tiny size. When asked what he will do with the Little Ogre, Soul says he accepts it is part of him. He then eats the Little Ogre, much to Maka's disgust.

Mabaa

Mabaa (魔婆?)
The current leader of all witches. She is held in high regards for being almost as powerful as Shinigami. Her left eye was taken by Free and is now covered by a bandage with 1/2 written across it. Her specialty is Spatial Magic and she does not appear to have an animal theme.

Mifune

Mifune (ミフネ Mifune?)
Voiced by: Kenjirō Tsuda (anime)
Mifune used to be a bodyguard for a mafia family. He was sent to kill a rival family and retrieve the witch that they had, but when he noticed the witch in question was just a kid, he decided to leave the mafia business and protect the kid witch instead. Mifune carries a giant scabbard full of katana with him, wrapped in caution tape saying 'Keep Out', as well as a single katana in a normal scabbard at his side. His attacks center around his Infinite One-Sword Style (無限一刀流 Mugen Ittōryū?) which allows him to attack using either a single or multiple swords. Mifune also uses his swords by throwing them into the ground and using them as platforms to travel across. He is incredibly dextrous, and is able to pick up and swing a sword forcefully using the big toe of his foot even while wearing a sandal. Mifune often wears a sweatshirt with the word OSAMURAI emblazened on the left breast. His name comes from legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, who portrayed samurai in many films. In the manga, Mifune has a soul so strong that it counts for ninety-nine souls by itself. In the anime this is not specified. He really likes being around children, even playing with the idea of being a teacher when it is suggested to him. Due to his fondness of children, he carries around candy with him.
Black Star was the first DWMA student to run into Mifune. He was after the witch Angela, but Mifune stepped in to protect her. This started the long rivalry between them. While Black Star managed to defeat Mifune, he decided not to kill Angela as she was still a child. Later on, Mifune becomes a bodyguard for Arachne's organization, but only because she is holding Angela captive. This is altered in the anime, where Mifune approaches the organization willfully, exchanging his services for Angela's protection against DWMA forces. In the manga Mifune is killed by Black Star, fading away after receiving a fatal wound to the stomach. In the anime, Black Star defeats him but does not kill him. Instead he offers Mifune a chance to become a teacher at the DWMA.
Angela Leon (アンジェラ・レオン Anjera Reon?)
{{anime voicesAyaka Saitō}} (anime)
Angela is the first real witch introduced in the series. She was the witch whose soul Black Star had wanted to claim. When he saw Angela was just a child Black Star gave up on killing her. Angela is a kid witch who is not very good at magic, which is the reason Mifune is protecting her. In the past she was kidnapped by a mafia family. Mifune, who was working for another mafia boss called Marlon, was sent to kill her but he betrayed Marlon by kidnapping and protecting her instead. Angela cares for Mifune and calls anyone that fights with him a bully (even if Mifune started the fight). Her animal theme seems to be chameleons due to her hat's appearance and the entrance of her castle. The only magic Angela has shown to be capable of is partial invisibility. She is shown attending witch meetings alongside Mifune, something that greatly angers Eruka, as Eruka dislikes humans. Later in the series Angela and Mifune ally themselves with Arachne, though it is implied that if Mifune does not cooperate Angela will be hurt. One of the duties of Arachnophobia members is to play with her. After the fall of Arachnophobia, she is taken in by the DWMA and is watched over by Black Star, Tsubaki, and Kim. Due to the fact that she is too young for her destructive instincts to have activated yet, it is suggested that exposing her to Kim's healing magic might slow the onset.

Ox Ford

Ox Ford (オックス・フォード Okkusu Fōdo?)
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino (anime)
Ox is one of the top students at the DWMA in terms of grades, and he is Harvar's meister. His name is a pun on the University of Oxford. He calls himself the "Skilled General Lightning King" a fact that annoys Black Star because 'King' and 'General' are two very different titles. He also has great, openly one-sided feelings for Kim. In the manga, Kim starts to reciprocate his feelings later in the series, when Ox attempts to rescue her from Arachnophobia and shows his sincere adoration for her. Ox constantly studies, but claims that "Inside, Harvar and I are nothing but nerds, but outside of school, we become beasts". One of Ox's notable features is his hairstyle, which is a shaved head except for the sides, which are styled into ox-like horns (he apparently styles it this way every morning). Ox's attacks focus on using Harvar's lightning powers on contact. He can also perform anti-air and anti-ground attacks.
Harvar D. Éclair (ハーバー・ド・エクレール Hābā Do Ekurēru?)
{{anime voicesWataru Hatano}} (anime)
Harvar is Ox's weapon and takes the form of a spear. In weapon form, he has the power of lightning. Like Ox, he is named after a university. In Harvar's case Harvard University. His last name is derived from the French word for lightning. Like most weapons, he can change a part of his body into his weapon form. Harvar can turn one of his hands into the point of his spear form, as well as generate an electric charge through his hand (even without changing it to his weapon form). As evident in the manga during the infiltration of the Arachnophobia castle, Harvar is fiercely loyal to Ox and prioritizes his meister's safety above all else. He maintains an ice-cold composure in battle even when Ox does not.

Shinigami

Shinigami (死神?)
Voiced by: Ryusuke Ōbayashi (drama CD), Rikiya Koyama (anime) John Swasey (English)
Shinigami, referred to with the suffix sama as a term of respect, is Death himself. He is the founder and leader of the Death Weapon Meister Academy. Shinigami is the most powerful character in Soul Eater, with the kishin Asura being the only other character capable of fighting him on equal footing. After defeating the kishin eight hundred years ago, Shinigami used his own soul to seal him underground and founded the DWMA above the location. Due to the seal, Shinigami cannot leave Death City.
Shinigami prefers to remain in the "Death Room" in the DWMA, where he oversees the school and gives out orders to the faculty and students. He can be contacted through a window or mirror by writing 42-42-564 (shini-shini-koroshi, which literally means death-death-murder in Japanese numeric substitution). Shinigami's personal weapon is the Death Scythe Spirit, Maka's father, who almost never leaves his side. This means Shinigami constantly has to put up with Death Scythe's antics on fatherhood, causing the two to bicker quite regularly. Shinigami has a son named Death the Kid. He cares for him but at the same time thinks he can be quite the handful, and is glad that Patti and Liz look after him.
Shinigami has a special move called the "Shinigami Chop" where he smacks people on the head with his oversized, flat hands. Though the attack is often used playfully to shut up Death Scythe, when serious Shinigami can use these chops to knock someone unconscious or slam them into the ground. Before he founded the DWMA, Shinigami wore a more realistic skull-like mask and spoke in a much scarier manner but he changed in order not to scare the children of his school. Though Shinigami acts and appears like a joker, if provoked he will return to his serious and threatening demeanor.
In the anime, Shinigami uses the power of Brew to turn Death City into a gigantic, odd-looking mecha, so he can attack Baba Yaga's Castle. He captures the kishin Asura and they resume their battle, but this time Shinigami has his Death Scythe to fight with. When Shinigami is gaining the upper hand, Asura directs a powerful attack at Death the Kid. Shinigami shields his son from the blast but is gravely injured in the process and unable to fight, leaving Asura unchallenged to bring about a new world order filled with madness.

Sid Barett

Sid Barett (死人(シド)・バレット Shido Baretto?)
Voiced by: Susumu Akagi (drama CD), Masafumi Kimura (anime)
Sid is a DWMA teacher who dies at the start of the series and is turned into a zombie by Dr. Stein. Even though Stein also took over his teaching job, Sid still goes to the DWMA to help the students and teachers in any way he can. His reason for helping the school is that it is what he would have done when he was alive. Sid often acts as a spy to get information on the witches and their plans.
In the manga Sid, Stein and Death Scythe were a part of the team which was responsible for the annihilation of the Star Clan. Sid apparently knew White Star and saw him as he killed innocents and became a kishin. After the annihilation of the clan, it was Sid who took in Black Star and raised him at DWMA, disregarding Stein's advice to either kill or abandon the baby. As such, Sid is considered not only Black Star's mentor, but flashbacks have shown that they also share a brotherly bond or even a father/son relationship.
When he was alive, Sid was a three star knife meister and in death his skills are undiminished. His weapon partner is the combat knife Mira Kniges. Besides using her for fighting, Sid can also use Kniges to create coffin-shaped escape routes. He is very proficient at tunneling, using this skill for sneak attacks and escaping enemies. Sid is also capable of using the Death Scythe Yumi Azusa to make sniper attacks.
Mira Kniges
Voiced by: Junko Noda (anime)
Mira Kniges replaces Medusa as the DWMA's school nurse. She is Sid's partner, and is covered in bandages (although early in the manga series she is shown without the bandages). She becomes a combat knife in weapon form. Her name is a pun for the Japanese pronounciation of the english word "knives".

Yumi Azusa

Yumi Azusa (弓 梓 Yumi Azusa?)
Voiced by: Yukana (anime)
Yumi Azusa is the Death Scythe in charge of East Asia. She comes off as being bookish and analytical. Yumi was the student council president when Stein and the other Death Scythes were students. She used to scold Spirit for his endless flirting, and Stein for his urge to dissect everything. Yumi was said to have been a small yet talkative child. She still treats the others as little kids in the way a teacher would (like clapping to get their attention and telling them to line up and walk in a single file line) much to their embarrassment. Yumi is suggested to have a genius IQ and is an extremely competent information gatherer and tactician.
Yumi's weapon form is a mix between a crossbow and a musket with a rifle scope. She fires compressed soul wavelength with high accuracy, stating herself she can shoot a target up to 10 km away with only a 1 mm margin of error. Yumi has a clairvoyant ability that allows her to see far ahead of whoever she is synchronized with. This ability is unique to her, and she can use it to calculate precise distances. While Yumi can use this ability over long distances, the more distance there is between her and the person she's synchronized with, the less she can see. Yumi can detect souls as well, and by seeing their soul know the age and strength of the soul's owner.
