This article is about the fictional race. For the fictional character sometimes referred to by the same name, see Makuta Teridax.
The Brotherhood of Makuta were a sect of evil and sadistic shapeshifters within the fictional Lego Bionicle universe named Makuta that lead distinct armies and warriors. They served as mysterious antagonists during the Bionicle Chronicles storyline, the first series in the storyline, and focus upon the actions of their current leader, Teridax, simply known as the Makuta. Teridax became the main antagonist of the BIONICLE storyline, who led a rebellion against the Great Spirit Mata Nui and plotted an extensive plan to overthrow him, so far successful. In the next series, Bionicle Adventures and Bionicle Legends, the full extent, including the Brotherhood's history and involvement within the Bionicle storyline are fully explored, and its members.
The Brotherhood of Makuta was founded roughly 100,000 years prior to the events of Bionicle Legends with the creation of the Makuta species. On a remote southern island, the Great Spirit Mata Nui crafted their living bodies from a pool of greenish-black liquid hidden in an underground chamber. The Brotherhood was led by Miserix and took control of servants and armies such as the Rahkshi to form the Brotherhood, stationed on the island of Destral. Gorast, using an artifact known as the Heart of the Visorak, enslaved Visorak armies for the Brotherhood's use. They established alliances with the Dark Hunters to modify the Hunters' agents, increase their ranks, loan weapons, and create Rahi in exchange for the services of the Dark Hunter agents for the Makuta. They also collaborated with the Nynrah Ghosts. The earliest known action of the Brotherhood was sending Mutran, Icarax, and Pridak on a mission to negotiate with the Vortixx to lower the cost of their exports, as the Vortixx demanded prices higher than what Matoran settlements could afford. Several centuries later, the Brotherhood allied themselves with the League of Six Kingdoms, providing Rahi beasts. The alliance held, but the Brotherhood distrusted the League, complying if only to service the warlords of the Great Spirit. However, Miserix enlisted Takadox to watch over the Barraki, nevertheless, and Mutran personally never sent Kalmah a Rahi that lived over three days.
Nearly 80,000 years prior to the events of Bionicle Legends, the League finally proposed a plot to conquer Metru Nui and overthrow the Great Spirit, which caused Takadox to sell them out to the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood mustered Makuta Teridax, backed by armies of Exo-Toa, Visorak, Rahkshi, and Toa in a united effort to crush the League and successfully captured the Barraki warlords, and of lesser importance, Mutran and Gorast to investigate the remains of Kalmah's fortress. Teridax was unable to execute them (due to Botar's intervention), but began to form a plan based on the idea that the Brotherhood could perhaps overthrow the Great Spirit where the League could not. Sometime after the end of the League, the Matoran Civil War occurred. Makuta Teridax, seeing the possibility of seeing how the Brotherhood could impose order, sealed the war armies in the Archives and unleashed Rahi exhibits upon them, in what was known as the Archives Massacre. The Matoran began to fear the Brotherhood after the event, and Miserix assigned Makuta to regions across the Matoran Universe. To prevent such an incident occurring again, Miserix also declared the Brotherhood must increase their involvement outside Destral's laboratories, the Makuta species as a whole discovered the honor and devotion to the Great Spirit, and felt jealously toward the Great Spirit, resentment and ultimately hatred.
Meanwhile, during the events of the Matoran Civil War, Makuta Mutran was dispatched to an unnamed island where the being Tren Krom was located, the objective of the mission was to ascertain him as a threat or not. Mutran was pulled into his cave and Tren Krom probed his mind as Mutran did the same. He fell unconscious and awakened with knowledge that Teridax needed to overthrow the Great Spirit, and informed him on his return. Teridax called a Convocation of the Makuta and stated his "Plan" to overthrow the Great Spirit. Miserix attacked Teridax, realizing the plan was also an attempt at leadership, but Teridax left it to the assembled Makuta to decide whom they favored, and the majority sided with Teridax, who became leader and sentenced Miserix to death as his first act, leaving Spiriah and Krika to carry out the task. Spiriah later confronted Krika, who told him he lacked the will to kill Miserix mask-to-mask, and left Krika to do so. He ultimately decided to give him a chance, and imprisoned him on a volcanic island named Artidax, guarded by Rahi, unknown to Spiriah or the other Makuta. The following year, Gorast and Icarax tracked those who opposed the Plan with objections or sided with Miserix initially and killed them, nailing their Kanohi to the walls of the Convocation Chamber as a reminder.
From 70,000 years to the events of Bionicle Adventures, the Brotherhood began to oppress Matoran without jeopardizing their image. At 70,000 years prior, Spiriah conducted an experiment on Zakaz and its inhabitants, the Skakdi, using a Makuta virus, seeing a potential army, and departs leaving the island under the Visorak's protection, and when he returned, the Skakdi developed heightened negative characteristics and elemental and vision powers, which they used to overthrow the Visorak and begin a civil war. The Brotherhood in response quarantined the island and planned to execute Spiriah for his treachery, instead going rogue for real, instead of being labeled rogue as the Brotherhood claimed he was when conducting the experiment. At 30,000 years prior, Makuta began experiencing difficulties with moving their armor, starting with Bitil. Chirox examined this development and pulled his armor, revealing greenish-black energy and sampled it. He concluded the Makuta evolved from a physical state to pure energy, most likely because of the process they were created. In response, Teridax summoned the Nynrah Ghosts to craft thick Protosteel armor for the Makuta.
All members of the Brotherhood share certain powers. Shape-shifting, shadow energy, and the ability of creating kraata, a wormlike entity that can take control of inanimate objects. Each of them also possesses unique powers of their own, adding up to 42 powers of Kraata, or 42 powers for the Makuta as well.
The Brotherhood is formed of many armies and pawns, which are led by members of the Makuta species. The Brotherhood's main armies consist of the Rahkshi, and the Visorak, armour controlled by kraata and spider-creatures, respectively. The Brotherhood's other servants include Exo-Toa, several Rahi, and Dark Hunters that have defected over to the Brotherhood's side including many more mutated beings. The Brotherhood's former servants include traitors such as Roodaka, former allies such as the Toa Hagah and the Dark Hunters, and Brotherhood weapons given to the Dark Hunters such as Voporak.
They have recently dispatched some of their number to Karda Nui to conquer the region and stop the creation of any future Toa of Light. Splitting into two groups, one in the sky (the Phantoka), and one in the swamp (the Mistika), the Phantoka were blinded by Toa Matoro's use of the Ignika, and thus enlist the aid of Shadow Matoran they created. The Mistika were mutated by the mutagen in the swamp, and are unable to shapeshift or access some of their Kraata powers.
When Mata Nui was brought back to life it caused an energy storm where most Makuta were situated. All were destroyed by the energy storm except Teridax who survived on account of not having a body.
Makuta Teridax recently stole Mata Nui's power and destroyed all other Makuta besides himself, meaning that the Brotherhood no longer exists.
Because they had evolved past the point of needing bodies they appear to be immortal but are not indestructible and exhibit a great vulnerability to light energy. All Makuta seen so far in the series are manipulative, egocentric, power hungry and vicious and share a dry, cruel sense of humour.
Many Makuta have appeared in Lego sets, some in full sets, others in combos.

|Assigned Region||Metru Nui|
Also known as The Makuta of Metru Nui or simply, The Makuta, Teridax is the main antagonist of the series and the current leader of the Brotherhood. When the name Makuta is used it is usually to refer to him. Teridax came up with the idea that someone could rule the world aside from Mata Nui (after being influenced by Takadox), and thus devised a master plan so brilliant that the other Makuta believed that it could indeed work. Teridax was the Makuta of Metru Nui, and was known only by his title to most. He was thought to be destroyed by Takanuva, but in actuality clung to life as pure energy. He recently took possession of a robotic drone named Maxilos, however, Maxilos was destroyed in a battle against the Barrakii and 100,000 sea creatures. He is now inhabiting Mata Nui's body. Teridax formerly wore the Kanohi Kraahkan prior to the destruction of his physical form and wielded the Staff of Darkness in combat. After his armor was destroyed his mask was then claimed by Makuta Icarax. Teridax, despite his sociopathic and narcissistic tendencies, seems to believe that his actions are for the good of the universe. However he possesses no scruples and has an unshakeable belief that it is his right to rule creation and re-make it in his image. Teridax is cunning and one of the most intelligent beings in the Bionicle universe though he has a tendency to be arrogant and overconfident which could contribute to his eventual defeat. Teridax is reputed for being a master tactician, having plans for every possible contingency of any situation, planning everything perfectly, from the sleep of Mata Nui to the death (and the saving) of the same, even his own temporary defeat at the hands of Takanuva.
When Matoro saved Mata Nui from death, Teridax took over his body, and Mata Nui's mind moved into the Kanohi Ignika. The Toa Nuva recently awakened "Mata Nui", actually awakening Teridax. Even the full power of all the Toa can not defeat him.
The former leader of the Brotherhood. Highly intelligent, he did not possess the deviousness of his subordinate Teridax, who betrayed him when he had a plan to overthrow the Great Spirit. When he refused to go along with Teridax's plan, Teridax had Miserix hauled off the Makuta Fortress on Destral to be killed. The masks of all the deceased Makuta who refused to go along with Teridax's plans are nailed to the wall of their conference room. Miserix's is a notable exception, he having been saved by Krika, and Miserix has since been found and freed by a reformed Brutaka and a team of several villains including Roodaka and Lariska on an uncharted island in the far south. After absorbing many Rahi "Klakk" creatures, he grew to a massive dragon, fitting with his penchant for shapeshifting into destructive, reptilian creatures. He was later sent by the Order of Mata Nui to find and kill Teridax.
He would be turned into a painting by Teridax while in the mind of Mata Nui.

Spiriah was the Makuta of Zakaz. Although a Makuta, Spiriah was an outsider in their ranks, and possessed a hope of aspiring to something greater, but lacked the knowledge and willpower to do so. Even with the creation of Rahi, he was unsuccessful and often disregarded as a true Makuta by his allies. Sometime after this, he was recruited back to Destral with Teridax's Convocation, and was assigned with Krika to kill Miserix, the only to oppose Teridax's plan of conquering the universe. Krika and Spiriah only imprisoned him on Artidax, with a shred of loyalty, and were the only ones to know of this fact.
He was later recruited under the command of Brutaka, via the Order of Mata Nui, for a secretive and possibly suicidial mission. Out of character, he intelligently and correctly assumed they were going to free Makuta Miserix, long-lost leader of the Brotherhood. After arriving on Stelt and stealing a ship, he sent orders to Zyglak, whom he sided with as fellow outsiders isolated from the universe, and prepared to take command of the ship and change course for Zakaz, where he "met defeat and disgrace", for revenge. Although his takeover of the ship and the slaughter of the Skakdi was assured by the might of the Zyglak, Spiriah was unprepared for the attack of the Order's army, the species of the Barraki Ehlek who inhabited the seas of Zakaz and were modified to serve as an army if the Brotherhood dared to rebel, who were signaled by the final member of the team, Lariska, who was employed by the Order to follow Brutaka's team if an event such as this would occur. Brutaka then in a surprise attack once again took command of the ship.
He decided, after his unsuccessful maneuver, to go along with his "mission", with some help from Brutaka, who bluffed him into believing he could not take on all of them and the Brotherhood would no doubt find them if he did defeat them. After arriving on a barren and desolate island, Spiriah armed himself with a Midak Skyblaster from the weapons cache Trinuma delivered, but immediately remembered this island from Mutran's recollection of his visit with Tren Krom. However, he and his "allies" were unable to escape him, and were taken into the cave where he was bound. Tren Krom was surprised to learn of Spiriah and his fellow Makuta's plan of seizing power using his information, but horrified to learn that after they succeeded, Spiriah described they most likely would kill him. Tren Krom thus, after the death of Carapar who attempted to attack him unsuccessfully, let them free along with Spiriah, condemning them to the fate which their universe had created for them. After the encounter, the team proceeded to Miserix's prison on Artidax, but were trapped inside a tunnel by Takadox, who fled in their ship. Proceeding through the cavern past dangerous Rahi guardians, Spiriah ultimately landed before Miserix and plead innocence after his former leader questioned why he was never rescued, and ultimately, Spiriah was killed and absorbed by Miserix for his rebellion.
During his time with Brutaka's strike team, Spiriah wore a form similar to Antroz, even with the same mask: Kanohi Jutlin: Mask of Corruption, but this is probably only because the toy based on him was actiually a combo which used pieces from Antroz's set. He also gained a Midak Skyblaster courtesy of Botar's and Trinuma's delivery of a weapons cache, selected personally by Brutaka for Spiriah, who warned him "not to point it at himself- or anyone else". He also had poisonous fangs and sharp claws, and the Makuta's standard array of powers.

Like all Makuta, Kojol once worked solely on experimenting and creating Rahi, specializing in flying and marine Rahi. When the Makuta were assigned to various islands to watch over them, he was entrusted with the island of Artakha and the uninhabited island connected to it, and was one of the few beings who knew its ruler. He kept the location of the island a secret from even his fellow Makuta, going so far as to use his air and sea Rahi to protect Artakha from all intruders, even other Makuta.
When the Makuta first evolved, Kojol had a small portion of his Antidermis and armor taken from him by Chirox for study so as to discern what had happened to them.
Later, Kojol led the Raid of Artakha to steal the Avohkii, and was the only Makuta to take part in it. During the invasion, Kojol led a strike team of Visorak, Rahkshi and Exo-Toa. The team of Visorak was quickly defeated by two Crystal Serpents, and the Rahkshi defeated by Artakha's inventions. However, the Exo-Toa managed to take control of the island, permitting Kojol to enter Artakha's fortress and take the Avohkii, something he should not have done, as by doing so, it would have proven that the Brotherhood of Makuta was involved.
In the aftermath, Kojol's death was planned by Order of Mata Nui member Tobduk as a request by Artakha to eliminate all who knew how to get to the island. After he went to Xia to request a type of virus to be incorporated into a weapon, the virus "escaped" and devoured Kojol's armor. Kojol's Antidermis was then destroyed by the blazing flames of a Xian foundry.

Tridax, like all Makuta, was created over 100,000 years ago in order to supply the universe with Rahi. At some point in time, he and other Makuta shunned their inner light, making them beings of pure darkness. Not long after, their bodies evolved to the point of being pure energy, encased in Protosteel armor. When Teridax summoned all the Makuta and proposed his plan to overthrow Mata Nui, Tridax sided with Teridax.
Tridax worked with Mutran to create the Shadow Leeches, using a Kanohi Olmak to deposit their experiments in various places across the Matoran Universe. Upon realizing that the mask could take him to other dimensions, Tridax gathered the Takanuva from various dimensions and returned them to his. After doing so, he drained their light to produce an army of Shadow Toa.
Tridax recently encountered Vezon, who had arrived on Destral at the behest of the Order of Mata Nui, and captured the half-Skakdi. After interrogating the crazed being, he decided to kill him after he lied about the island's teleportation system being sabotaged. The island then came under attack by the Order, and Tridax left to follow orders to transport the island to off the shore of Metru Nui and seize the island-city.
Tridax instead went to a sub-basement of the Destral Fortress, where he revealed his army of Shadow Toa to Vezon. Tobduk and Mazeka broke into the chamber and attacked. Tobduk recalled what another Makuta did on his home island while using his staff to dissintegrate Tridax' armor. In retribution for his home, Tobduk sent a blast of white-hot energy at Tridax' antidermis, effectively killing the Makuta.

Icarax is the Makuta of Karzahni. Icarax is the most aggressive of the Makuta, and has more combat experience than even his leader Teridax. During the early days of the Brotherhood prior to Teridax's reign, he once had a lieutenant, Pridak, who would later join the League of Six Kingdoms, and once went on a mission to Xia to discuss with the Vortixx the possibility of reducing their exports' cost, where Icarax ended the negotiations successfully after furiously taking his anger out on the island. He was later present with during a Brotherhood meeting with his former aide and his Barraki allies. He is one of the 8 best Makuta in the Brotherhood of Makuta aside from Teridax.
During the change of command to Teridax, he was one of the last to side with Teridax in support of "the Plan", believing its complexity to be inferior compared to outright conquest, and with Gorast was assigned to slaughter all of Miserix's supporters. However, he did not voice his opinions about his lack of faith in "the Plan", until Teridax's failed conquest of Metru Nui, where he stated his own plan: "seize Metru Nui", and "launch a wave of conquest", that would supposedly make the Barraki look insignificant in comparison. Without permission, he abandoned Karzahni with a legion of Manas, and invaded the Northern Continent, where he was confronted by Teridax, and in an epic fight, was soundly defeated/humiliated by Teridax, the Brotherhood leader allowing him to live knowing in the future he would require him, but also warned him that after this, he would dispose of the traitor, whether in a year, a thousand years, or even a hundred-thousand. Icarax later claimed Teridax lacked the will to kill him.
While Teridax was on Voya Nui, he telepathically communicated with Icarax and told him to retrieve the Kanohi Kraahkan from the Silver Sea, narrowly escaping a confrontation with Takanuva. Icarax retrieved it and then started wearing it.
Teridax then instructed Icarax to retrieve the Staff of Artakha from Xia, which he did, defeating Onua and revealing himself to him, who then told the other Toa Nuva. Whilst on the island, he learned of a weapon order placed by a group unknown to Xia. He then headed to Karzahni and, because they needed the staff, the Toa Nuva followed him there. Icarax fought and defeated all the Toa Nuva in battle except Gali, who swept him away with a Nova Blast, destroying the realm in the process. Afterwards, he managed to travel to Mahri Nui where he handed over the Staff to Teridax. Icarax then returned to Xia to investigate the weapon order he had learned of earlier. He followed the shipment to an island just off of the coast of the Southern Continent, where he encountered and ambushed the beings who placed the order: Botar and Trinuma. During the battle that followed, Icarax killed Botar with his magnetic powers, and severely injured Trinuma, though he managed to escape. Icarax then returned to Metru Nui and attacked Takanuva with a Shadow Leech, which was originally intended for the Matoran Ahkmou, and turning the Toa into part Light and part Shadow. Following this, Icarax went to Destral, where he claimed Teridax's throne for himself.
When the entrance to Karda Nui was discovered by Vultraz, the news was relayed to Teridax, who ordered the Makuta to go to the universe core and seize it. Icarax, however, believed his orders were almost insane and refused to go. When Vican arrived at Destral to bring word of Antroz's request for help, Icarax interrogated the Matoran and then set him free to tell Antroz that if Icarax is to go to Karda Nui, Antroz should not control his actions. Later, Icarax arrived at Karda Nui after the Phantoka Toa Nuva destroyed the Shadow Leech Vat, and Antroz requested the Makuta to defeat the Toa Ignika. The five Makuta, including Mutran, then set off to attack the sole remaining Av-Matoran village. However, upon arrival they learned that the Toa Nuva and Av-Matoran had already left, and were in fact at their base retrieving the third Keystone. After the Toa retrieved the stone, the two sides began to battle each other. Icarax fought against the Toa Ignika, but during the battle, the Toa Ignika used his life powers to devolve him back to a biomechanical being. As the Makuta's armor was no longer designed for organs, Icarax was pained and let out a loud scream. In no shape to continue fighting, Icarax followed Mutran's decision to retreat and flew down towards the Swamp of Secrets to meet with the other three Makuta, but was guarded by the Toa Ignika.He was then killed by Gorast after attempting to sabotage the Plan by destroying the Codrex.

Makuta Antroz leads the Phantoka Makuta to invade Karda Nui, in order to control Mata Nui's situation and prevent the creation of any more Toa of Light by turning Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran. Like Vamprah and Chirox, Antroz was permanently blinded by the bright light caused by Matoro when he revived Mata Nui from death. The three Makuta mutated three Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran to act as their "eyes," with Antroz choosing Radiak to act as his. He has the Kanohi Jutlin, the Great Mask of Corruption. He was killed by the energy storms.

The planner and inventor of the three, Chirox creates Rahi that are devastating and dangerous at will and with relish. He is less of a fighter than Antroz, but is known to fight dirty using many means to win. He wears The Kanohi Shelek, the Mask Of Silence. It allowed him to make someone deaf or mute for a while. Like the other Makuta attempting to conquer Karda Nui, he can fly. He is partnered with the Matoran Kirop. He also has a feud with his fellow Makuta Mutran. The cause for this aggression is the fact that they are rival Rahi-designers.

The silent hunter, Vamprah therefore chooses to be mute. He loves to slowly track and kill his foes. Vamprah is even feared by the other Brotherhood of Makuta members. He is armed with hook claws and razor-sharp wing knives and can literally feed on the hope and feelings of others. Another weapon he has is a Tridax Pod carrying four shadow leeches. He wears the Kanohi Avsa, the Mask of Hunger, which drains light, energy, or positive emotions from a target at a distance. His preference is latter most of the time, but will drain energy if he is in combat. He is partnered with Gavla who can send enemies off balance and cause vertigo.

Makuta Mutran, like his fellow Makuta, were assigned to create bio-mechanical Rahi to populate the BIONICLE world. The task became an obsession to Mutran.
Mutran's first known actions were 100,000 years prior to the events of Bionicle Legends. Shortly after the completion of the Brotherhood's home base, Destral, Chirox and Mutran worked on Spiriah's failed Rahi experiment. During this time, Chirox and Mutran worked together as friends, but both despised the Makuta who would earn the nickname "failure". They were approached by Miserix. He informed the duo that the Vortixx had begun to demand higher prices for their exports', higher than what Matoran settlements could afford, and asked for one of them to journey with Icarax and Pridak to negotiate. The mission was a success- after Icarax demolished a few buildings. On departure, Mutran remembered he forgot his pet Rahi, a sentient rock. It later devoured Vortixx and grew into The Mountain.
Soon after the mission to Xia, Mutran, Teridax, Icarax, and Chirox were present at a meeting with the League of Six Kingdoms. He and his fellow Makuta were tasked with providing the faction Rahi under an uneasy alliance. Mutran and Gorast were later tasked with "cleaning up" Kalmah's fortress after the League rebelled. Although they found nothing, Mutran discovered a carving. The Blade Burrowers, his creations, had begun creating maps comprised of underground tunnels. Thus was unusual, as Mutran never sent Kalmah a Rahi surviving beyond three days. He inquired the Rahi himself with an imprisoned Toa's Kanohi Rau, yet the Burrowers' only know they must continue this tunnel pattern. As of yet, the mystery is beyond his comprehension, but Mutran believes the answer is of great importance.
500 years following the end of the League of Six Kingdoms, Mutran was assigned the center of the Southern Continent to guard following the Matoran Civil War. He at this time was already dispatched by Miserix to acertain whether Tren Krom was a threat to the Brotherhood. He was pulled into his cave and Tren Krom probed his mind, leaving Mutran to do the same. Hanging onto survival, he fell unconscious and awoke on the beach. He realized that he had Tren Krom's knowledge- knowledge that Teridax needed to overthrow the Great Spirit. Upon his return to Destral, Mutran informed Teridax of his new-found knowledge. In response, Teridax called a Convocation of the Makuta, in which Mutran was present, and stated his plan to overthrow Mata Nui. He witnessed Miserix being overthrown and fighting Teridax, and sided with Teridax, hesitating at first, but quickly realizing his Plan could work, and huddled with Teridax and Chirox at how to best strike at the Great Spirit.
Later, he visited Destral with Bitil to discuss how to best support the Plan, and how disappointing it was that much of it could rely on the actions of Kojol. Suddenly, Mutran and Bitil found themselves unable to move. Chirox concluded the Makuta evolved from organic tissue to energy, and Teridax ordered the Nynrah Ghosts to modify Mutran and the other Makuta's armor. Chirox also discovered they could take over robotic and spiritless bodies by transporting their energy within it, took over an Exo-Toa, and threw Mutran into a wall. He decided to let him live, if only to introduce him to his Lohrak. As he worked on his Lohrak, he investigated the disappearance of two Rahkshi squads. They had been dispatched to the Southern Continent. He found it coincidental that they participated in a raid led by Kojol to steal the Kanohi Avohkii. This was dispelled when two Exo-Toa disappeared from their guard post, and suspected that someone was taking revenge for their raid. He surmised Kojol would follow, but decided not to inform Teridax because he despised the buffoon and wished he would die so he wouldn't have to do kill him himself. Later, he regretted his actions as Kojol and anyone else who knew of Artakha's location died, wanting to know the location for himself.
Shortly after the death of Kojol, he was visited by Chirox, who carried a dead specimen of his Lohrak. He raged, as the Lohrak was a name of one of his previous creations. The Lohrak was a slimy Rahi that Chirox had struggled to create. The confrontation ended when the Great Cataclysm occurred, devastating the Destral base, but confirming the Plan's first stage succeeded. Despite Teridax's intital success, he was disgraced with the fiasco that followed. During the 1000 years (as Teridax terrorized the Matoran) that followed, Mutran continued his experiments while ignoring his duty to the Southern Continent. He experimented with Kraata to created a Light-sucking creature named Shadow Leeches. He tested them on a Southern Continent inhabitant Vican, who sought an adventurous life. He became his lab assistant, and brought him to Destral. Together, they witnessed Gorast throwing Vultraz, another Shadow Matoran, through a wall. Gorast was furious as Vultraz "failed" to inform the Brotherhood of his discovery- a gateway into Karda Nui. Gorast informed Teridax of their discovery, and Mutran and Vican joined Antroz, Vamprah, Chirox, Gorast, Krika, and Bitil to transform the Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran and conquer the region.
He engineered a Hive to house the Shadow Leeches. He built vats to house his creations (including a toxic one perfect for Chirox) as Antroz, Vamprah, and Chirox transformed the Av-Matoran. He was responsible for the mutations of several Shadow Matoran, including the addition of wings and Radiak becoming a quadruped in a spider-like form because he was moody. He decided to create a chronicle of his life in the Brotherhood, named The Mutran Chronicles (see Bionicle Legends), and just as he completed, witnessed a bright light that came from Toa Mahri Matoro's use of the Kanohi Ignika. The light blinded his Makuta allies, but left Mutran fortunately intact. As he worked on the 3rd batch of Shadow Leeches and ordering Vican to kick a failed experiment out of a window, he was approached by Vamprah and brought to Antroz in the Makuta's lair. He then engineers a flying steed for Vican to fly to Destral and summon Icarax, giving him a Tablet of Transit.
He later fought against Lewa, Pohatu, Kopaka, Tanma, Solek, and Photok when they discovered the Shadow Leech Hive, casting Lewa, Pohatu, Tanma and Photok into a vision of Ignika as a monster. He knocked Solek unconscious and used a mental assault to cause Kopaka to doubt his powers and bring the Toa Nuva to collapse, and attempted to finish him off with a Shadow bolt. However, Solek deflected the attack with a Light shield, and Kopaka, fooling the Makuta, quickly recovered and bound Mutran in ice. It was the intervention of Antroz, Chirox, and Vamprah that defeated the three Toa Nuva and Matoran.
When they awaken, Mutran assists in threatening the Matoran if the Toa attempt to escape and transform them into Toa of Shadow. Pohatu, however, uses his Stone powers to knock them off-balance and uses his Kanohi Kakama to escape through the bonds and destroy the Shadow Leech vats, and Toa Ignika kills the Hive, as it was a modified sentient version of the pet rock Mutran once had. Mutran and the other Makuta escape, and he almost kills Kirop for leading the Toa to the Hive. In retaliation, they assault the final Av-Matoran village, finding it abandoned, as they infiltrated the Makuta's lair for a Keystone. They retreat and battle against the six. Antroz and Icarax are injured, forcing Mutran to unleash a blast of Shadow, and calls for the Makuta to retreat to the Swamp of Secrets before the other Toa Nuva retrieve the Keystones. Mutran is caught briefly by the Toa Nuva, and left alone as the Makuta and the Toa enter the "final battle".
As the Toa Nuva and Makuta battled the "final battle", Mutran relocated in an island in the Swamp of Secrets using equipment stored outside. To guard the Shadow Leech vats in their new location, he engineered a Klakk, a former Rahi creation, which busted from the vat and emitted a sonic shriek at Vican, and flew away. Mutran ordered him to retrieve the beast. He did not know the shriek shattered the barrier that Shadow Leeches make when they suck the Light from its victim, thus turning Vican back to a Le-Matoran, and then abandoned him to tell Toa Takanuva of his discovery. After a long period, Mutran grew impatient with Vican until Antroz teleported to him. Antroz announced they must be prepared for the final stages of the Plan, which Mutran briefly wondered if it was wise to allow the Toa Nuva to awaken the Toa Nuva, but was corrected, and was sent to aid Gorast in a fight against Icarax, who had begun to crush the Codrex to sabotage the Plan.
As he approached the Codrex, he sent a Shadow Matoran to Antroz to act as his eyes with Radiak gone, and dragged into battle by Gorast, who had him send white noise at Icarax to prevent him from hearing her battle plans she sent to Vamprah. Mutran witnessed Vamprah and Gorast simultaneously attacking Icarax, and told him Mutran said the Toa Nuva are about to awaken the Great Spirit, which made him attempt a teleport into the Codrex. In response, Gorast triggered her Kanohi Felnas's power to make Icarax's power run wild, and with a burst of energy from Vamprah sent Icarax's molecules across the universe. Later, when the Toa Nuva (save Gali), left the Codrex, Mutran fought against them, as Toa Ignika awakens the Great Spirit. As a result, the energy storms begin and Mutran flies into the edges of the storm to see if he could tap into its energies, and figures a way to do so. Suddenly, the storm erupts, disintegrating Mutran's protosteel armor and his energies in a microsecond.
Mutran specializes in mutations that tend to be extremely destructive in nature. Chirox, a fellow mutation specialist, thinks very little of his work, however. Mutran has a personality reminiscent of a mad scientist. Like all Makuta, he is sadistic, egocentric and ambitious though not quite as ambitious as Teridax whose plan to conquer the universe Mutran considered delusional until his encounter with Tren Krom which had a detrimental effect on Mutran's already deranged mind. Mutran is somewhat more loyal than most of his race and on numerous occasions shows respect and even concern for his fellow Makuta, an example being when Miserix attacked Teridax with an energy blast during the Convocation, causing Mutran to stand up in order to go and help Teridax to his feet, but resumed his previous position after Miserix glared at him.
Mutran wields the standard Makuta powers, in addition to his own. These include the ability to wield the element of Shadow, and the creation of a Shadow Hand, and the ability to create Kraata and Rahkshi, and possession of the 42 Kraata powers. He also possesses the strengths and weaknesses of the Makuta's evolution from a physical form to an energy form, thus the ability to shape-shift, control robot bodies, and can crush the will of an enemy and absorb them into their bodies to increase mass.
During the invasion of Karda Nui, Mutran's current appearance was similar to Chirox, with a green and black deco with silver armor. He wielded a bladed staff-like weapon, the Shadow Spear, and a hand-held Shadow Blade, which could channel his Shadow and 42 Kraata powers. He was outfitted to hold a Tridax Pod and thus Shadow Leeches, and wore a Kanohi Great Shelek, the Great Mask of Silence.

|Enemies||Toa, Dark Hunters, Barraki.|

Makuta Bitil made his first appearance in The Mutran Chronicles. In the sixth entry, he was present a Convocation that Teridax issued, becoming first to support his Plan of rebellion against the Great Spirit. He made another appearance in the eighth entry, where he was visiting Destral with Mutran, becoming first of the Makuta to evolve.
In Swamp of Secrets, Bitil joins the Mistika strike team in Karda Nui, becoming a major character in the Bionicle 2008 storyline. He took on a beetle-like form (as a result, his name is a play on beetle), and is mutated by the Swamp of Secrets. When the book begins, Bitil ambushes Onua Nuva, using his blaster to control the mechanical parts of his body and using his Kanohi Mohtrek to summon past selves' for support. He then brought him to the Makuta's lair. Onua is able to escape when the blaster's effects wear off, by an explosion of mud that disrupts Bitil's concentration and made his former selves' disappear. Bitil pursues Onua, only to fall into the swamp encased in an energy field created from Onua's blaster. However, he is able to free himself and reunite with his Makuta allies. Suddenly, Chirox falls from the sky, and they let the Toa Nuva escape to investigate. Bitil and his two allies then regroup in their swamp lair. In the end of the book, the Toa Nuva are able to steal the last Keystone and both sides meet up with their Phantoka counterparts, preparing for a last confrontation.
In the following book, The Final Battle, Bitil fights the Toa Nuva in front of the Codrex, attacking Onua with a power scream, before they escape inside. He also attempts to destroy the energy field afterward, and when the Axalara T-9 emerges, he summons an army using his mask. The army attacks with vehicle with magnetism and laser vision, only to be rammed by the Rockoh T-3. Antroz orders Bitil later on in the battle to attack Takanuva, assisted by Chirox. He initially attacks with six selves and shadow bolts, but the Toa proves difficult to fight, warped by a Shadow Leech. The scales are tipped even more once Jetrax T-6 arrives and defeats a Bitil that almost killed Takanuva. Realizing the Toa Nuva is needed for the Plan, Bitil fires chain lighting and with Chirox, teleports away. They arrive at the Codrex to easily confine the Toa Nuva and kill them when they awaken the Great Spirit when the energy storms begin. Bitil attempts to use his flight powers to escape, as the energy waves of the storm disrupt his teleportation powers. However, he cannot outfly the storm, and the vortex disintegrates him.

Gorast is the Makuta of the Tren Krom Peninsula, and is designated as the "Mistress of the Acid Falls". She is also the Makuta that enslaved the Visorak as the Makuta's armies. Gorast is also a part of the Swamp of Secrets strike team in the Makuta's invasion of Karda Nui, and thus is dubbed as a "Mistika".
Feared throughout her kingdom by the native Matoran, she manipulated two of interest to her, Mazeka and Vultraz, five years prior to the invasion of Karda Nui. In their conflicts, she disguised herself as an armored warrior with attributes of a Toa of Water. During their final squabble, she rescued Mazeka, who had brought Vultraz off a cliff seemingly to his death, and proclaimed him as a hero, telling him to spread the news of the villainous Matoran's demise. However, she rehabilitated Vultraz with the assistance of Rahi as a Shadow Matoran, and sent him to locate and kill a certain Matoran named Krakua. Now unrecognizable and deemed dead by his former friends, he accepted the challenge as her personal spy. Gorast later cast him away as her subordinate after failing to inform her of his discovery of an entrance to Karda Nui, and subsequently informed Teridax of it, who responded to invade and turn the Av-Matoran to Shadow Matoran to prevent the creation of Toa of Light.
Upon Makuta Teridax's rebellion, Gorast and Bitil were the first to side with her. On Teridax's order, Gorast and Icarax hunted down and killed the Makuta who had initially defended Miserix. She wears the Kanohi Felnas, the Mask of Disruption, and a Nynrah Ghostblaster. Gorast is generally prepared to die for the Makuta cause. She idolizes Teridax to the point where she would kill another Makuta for his cause.
She was killed by the Energy Storms, babbling about how Krika was right and that Teridax betrayed them all.
|Kanohi||Kanohi Crast, Mask of Repulsion|
|Allies||Brotherhood of Makuta|
|Enemies||Toa, Dark Hunters, Barraki|
|Assigned Region||Northern area of the Northern Continent, Zakaz|
"He strikes from the mist like a phantom, appearing and disappearing at will". He is the Makuta of the Northern portion of the Northern Continent as well as the replacement Makuta of Zakaz (after Spiriah's exile). He was first featured in a strange painting found in the Archives by Whenua. The meaning and origin of the painting is unknown. After entering the mutagenic waters of the swamp, he has lost his ability to shapeshift and some of his Rahkshi powers. He has the Kanohi Crast, the Mask of Repulsion, venomous fangs and Nynrah ghost blaster. Krika may be the strangest enemy the Toa Nuva have ever faced. Krika is the leader of the Makuta Invasion force in the Swamp of Secrets. He doesn't seem to be as evil, as he actually shows remorse at what he and his people have done.
Eventually he found out that Teridax planned that all the Makuta in Karda Nui would die in the energy storms, betraying them all. He tried to tell the other Makuta, but Gorast, out of rage, used her disrupting powers to disrupt Krika's intangilbility powers, thus killing him.
Armies that serve under the Brotherhood of Makuta.
Fierce warriors that are powered, like Bohrok, from tiny minds, but unlike Bohrok, these are called Kraata, which can be produced by all Brotherhood members. Rahkshi are destroyers by nature and will not stop until they complete their mission, making even Makuta reluctant to unleash them. They serve as the bulk of the Brotherhood armies, and a group of them were once sent to stop the Toa Nuva from creating the "Seventh Toa of Light" from coming into existence.
There are forty-two kinds of Rahkshi, but only six have been given names: Turahk, Guurahk, Lerahk, Panrahk, Vorahk, and Kurahk. Their sets can be formed into two "Rakhshi Kaita", which are canon and were the main villains in the comic "Shadows and Secrets".
The Visorak, nicknamed the "stealers of life", were venomous, spider-like creatures that were created by the Brotherhood. Their powers include Rhotuka spinners, the ability to spin webs and cocoons, and their trademark mutating "Hordika Venom", turning its victim to mindless beasts.
Later enslaved by Makuta Gorast, they were transformed into an army to serve their creators, controlled by a stone known as the "Heart of the Visorak", which was used to summon the entire horde to where it was placed in. Later controlled by Sidorak, and his viceroy, Roodaka, they descended upon Metru Nui in an invasion, but were disbanded after a betrayal of Roodaka's led to Sidorak's death. Eventually in dwellers in the dark the species became extinct because they were all lured to the island of artidax using the heart of the visorak and a volcanic eruption killed every single one of them.
The breeds of the Visorak include:
- Vohtarak- The fiercest of the Visorak and suicidally loyal to Sidorak. They are able to turn invulnerable temprarily as they make berserker charges. Armed with Rhotuka spinners which inflict a massive burning sensation. Red and orange in appearance.
- Boggarak- The only Visorak to have several unique Rhotuka powers that varies in water and on land. On land, it is able to dehydrate its target, in water, it can cause the target to float to the surface. Also armed with the ability to emit a sonic hum, which can turn the target to solid rock or gas. Loyal to Roodaka. Blue in appearance.
- Suukorak- Master strategists, Suukorak are known for playing dead to trap an enemy. Armed with a Rhotuka to generate an electrical field. White and light blue in appearance.
- Keelerak- Random and destructive, the Keelerak believed one of their fellow Visorak should lead the hordes, instead of Sidorak. Armed with an Acidic Rhotuka. Green in appearance.
- Roporak- Cautious, they have chameleon powers, allowing them to blend in. Armed with a Rhotuka that drains power from a foe. Brown and dark red in appearance.
- Oohnorak- Preferring to follow instead of lead, they are also skilled mimes to fool enemies, and have limited telepathic ability. They fire a Rhotuka to numb an opponent. Black and yellow in appearance.
- Kahgarak- An elite breed of Visorak, they guard important locations, and are larger and bulkier than regular Visorak. They have Rhotuka powers of opening a portal to the Field of Shadows, which can trap an enemy or unleash the Rahi known as "Zivon". They come in varied size and color.
All seven breeds also share a Rhotuka power of paralyzation.
Exo-Toa are huge mechanical beings that are armed with claws and rockets. The Exo-Toa were created by the Makuta, and later used in the war with The League of Six Kingdoms.
Roodaka is a female of the Vortixx, a race from the island of Xia. She has made deals with both the Dark Hunters and the Brotherhood of Makuta. At an early point of her life, she imported a Kanohi Dragon to Xia for research, and accepted training from the Dark Hunters in exchange for mutating Toa Nidhiki Mangai. Later, on joining the Brotherhood, she also mutated the Toa Hagah into Rahkshi/Turaga-like beings, named Rahaga. However, Sidorak double-crossed her, and took credit for the idea. A a result of that, when they were promoted for the success, was that Sidorak became King of the Visorak, while Roodaka was his Viceroy. Teridax would later summon them and the Visorak horde to Metru Nui, but secretly contacted Roodaka to free him from his protodermis prison, taking a shard of it with her. She later attempted to become the Queen of the Visorak horde after Sidorak died. She tried to take the elements from the Toa so that Teridax would be free, but since Vakama was their field commander, command went to him seeing as Roodaka betrayed Sidorak and left him to be killed by Keetongu. Vakama ordered the Visorak to disband, leaving Roodaka to be blasted by the combined powers of the Toa Hordika, and disappeared.
However, she continued to survive seeing as when she was blasted by the combined Toa powers, she held the shard of Teridax's prison, freeing him. Teleporting them both, Teridax had Roodaka serve the Brotherhood as an undercover agent in the Dark Hunters, but she was actually double-crossing both organizations. After discovering her treachery, the Shadowed One sent the Toa Nuva to kill her in a deal for the Staff of Artakha, but the Toa Nuva interviened and sent her into the custody of the Rahaga, who were changed back into Toa Hagah by her powers once more. She was later captured by the Order of Mata Nui, and pressed into service as a strike force to find Makuta Miserix. Succeeding, she was later imprisoned on Daxia. When Botars Replacement took a message to Hydraxon to free the Barraki, Roodaka was imprisoned in the Pit.
Ahkmou was a Po-Matoran from Metru Nui. Before the Great Cataclysm, Ahkmou discovered the location of the Po-Metru Great Kanoka Disk, but was blackmailed by the Dark Hunter Nidhiki into helping deal with the other Great Disk Matoran. However the Toa Metru rounded up the Great Disk Matoran (including Ahkmou) and later figured out that Ahkmou was betraying the Toa and Metru Nui. However they forced him to help find the Po-Metru Disk, and later the Toa and the six Matoran headed to the Great Furnace to destroy the Morbuzahk King Root. However the Morbuzahk attacked the Toa outside the Furnace, preventing them to get inside. Tehutti, the Onu-Metru Archivist who found his districts' Great Disk, had an idea to get the Toa inside the Furnace and he, Ahkmou and the other Matoran merged together into the Matoran Nui, which fought off the Morbuzahk. The Toa got inside the Furnace, and the Matoran Nui split back down again. Ahkmou then left the others but they were all captured by the Vahki and put into sleep mode by Teridax, who also completely wiped their memories. The rest of the Metru Nui Matoran were later put into sleep mode too, and the Toa Metru managed to rescue six from Teridax, promising to come back for the others later (which they did in the Great Rescue). Ahkmou was one of the rescued, along with Jaller, Orkahm, Tehutti, Kotu and Matoro. However in a later battle against the Vahki, Ahkmou's sphere was blasted into the Protodermis Sea. For days after that, the traitorous carver was lost at sea.
However Ahkmou was eventually found by Teridax, who awakened him. This happened shortly after the Great Rescue, where the Toa Metru got all the Matoran (except Ahkmou) to the island of Mata Nui. The Toa Metru then sacrificed their Toa Power to awaken the Matoran, transforming the Toa into Turaga.
Teridax told Ahkmou to serve him, as the Turaga and other Matoran were evil. When Turaga Onewa found out how much he knew about Metru Nui, he forced Ahkmou to not reveal any of it to the other Matoran. Ahkmou later did evil deeds for Teridax, such as causing the Po-Koro Epidermic by infecting Comet Kolhii Balls, until Pohatu found out, Ahkmou quickly fled the scene. Ahkmou later returned to Metru Nui with the Toa Nuva, Toa Takanuva, the Turaga and the other Matoran, after Takanuva defeated Teridax. Ahkmou accepted Teridax as dead.
